A Rare Antique 19th Century Folk Art ‘God In A Bottle’ Protection Whimsy.
These bottles were folk devotional objects made mostly in 18th to 19th century Europe, particularly in Britain and Germany. Inside, they contained miniature wooden symbols associated with the Passion of Christ.
They were aids for personal prayer or contemplation. Made by folk artists or prisoners (prisoner-of-war art is a common source). Occasionally made by monks or pious laypeople. Sometimes given as gifts of faith or used to inspire reflection on the Passion of Christ.
They also offered protection, comfort and solace to the owners. You’ll see the use of protection marks or hexes carved into the crucifix as they were also used to trap or ward off evil spirits.
A rare survivor!
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Bottle is structurally sound. Some minor breakages to the wooden structure inside. Good overall.
