A Rare Early 20th Century ‘The Turra Coo’ Mug And Accompanying Book Which Tells The Whole Story Of How A Cow Started A Riot In Scotland In 1913…!
‘The Turra Coo’ stands as a bold symbol of defiance from the town of Turriff, Aberdeenshire, in 1913. When farmer Robert Paterson refused to pay National Insurance contributions imposed by the 1911 Act, the government seized one of his cows in protest. But the townspeople rose up, furious at the injustice, and stopped the cow’s auction in a dramatic act of resistance. What began as one man’s stand became a powerful statement of rural pride and defiance. Today, ‘The Turra Coo’ is immortalised in a statue, a lasting tribute to the spirit of a community that refused to be silenced.
These ‘Turra Coo’ mugs were produced as commemorative keepsakes in the wake of the 1913 event. Crafted and sold to show solidarity with the farmers’ protest against compulsory National Insurance, they became a means for local people to express support for the “No Coo, No Tax!” movement.
A rare survivor.
