A Rare ‘Habitual Drunkard’ Card Issued By Newport Borough Police In 1903

These photographic cards were issued to all publicans and included the addresses and identifying features of individuals convicted of habitual drunkenness who were banned from all pubs. They served as a warning to landlords that if found supplying alcohol to the individuals they would be fined £10.

The description of the woman, named ‘Margaret Sullivan’, shows a snapshot in to what must have been a difficult and gruelling life. Sullivan is described as having a 'long scar right side of forehead, three moles on chin, surly looking, loud talker'. Her occupation is noted as 'Married woman'.

A sad and poignant piece of social history.

Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Some age related wear, but structurally sound with good strong imagery and text.

Measures 21cm x 10.5cm

Weighs 22.17 grams
