A Quite Incredible And Rare 12th Century Timber Fragment From The Old Templar Manor At Herdewyke In Warwickshire.

The Knights Templar was a military order of the Catholic faith, and one of the wealthiest and most popular military orders in Western Christianity. In their distinctive white mantles with a red cross, The Knights Templar were among the most skilled fighting units of the Crusades.

Herdewyke has a strong association with the Templars, so strong in fact that it has been claimed there is a connection with the Ark of the Covenant.

Many years have been spent searching for the Ark which contained two stone tablets with the ten commandments inscribed.

Although the ark itself has not been found, it is believed that one of the two slabs of stone have been found in the walls of an old Holy Well in the Herdewyke area.

The timber fragment on sale here was removed from an old Templar Manor in the Herdewyke area which I was fortunate enough to acquire from the personal collection of another dealer in West Berkshire.

You’ll see the striking carving to the centre of the piece which looks very similar to the ‘Red Cross’, a well-known image associated with the Knights Templar.

It Has Handwritten Text On The Back Which Reads ‘C12th Timber Fragment From The Old Templar Manor At Herdewyke’. Mounted On A Strong And Sleek Modern Stand.

Condition is good, commensurate with age. Structurally sound.

Measures 32cm x 27.5cm x 9cm
