A Collection Of Vintage World War 2 Letters Written & Sent Home By A Lieutenant Basil Drakeford, Who Had A Remarkable Story.
Lt. Drakeford’s journey during World War II was marked by resilience and hardship. After escaping the fall of Singapore aboard the vessel Elizabeth, he endured a harrowing ordeal. Survivor accounts detail that he swam ashore, found temporary refuge in a Malay village, and later continued his journey alone south through the jungle of the Banka Strait. During this time, he sustained leg injuries that became septic. Eventually, he was hospitalised in Batavia (now Jakarta), where he became a prisoner of war and succumbed to his injuries on 28 May 1942.
Lt. Drakeford’s service and sacrifice are commemorated by the Muntok Peace Museum, which documents the experiences of those who fled Singapore during its fall.
Drakeford is buried at the Jakarta War Cemetery in Indonesia. His grave is located in Plot 4, Row E, Grave 11. This cemetery, also known as the Menteng Pulo War Cemetery, was designed by British architect Ralph Hobday and is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
