A Rare Late 19th Century Petrified Tumbler From Matlock’s Petrifying Well.

A petrifying well is one that can make an object acquire a stony appearance over a period of months or years. In the past, this was believed to be a result of magic or witchcraft but it is an entirely natural phenomenon and is caused by deposition of minerals in the water.

Almost forgotten now, this is the only remaining working well left in Matlock Bath, where several wells once existed and were visited by thousands of Victorian trippers. During the 19th century, such objects were much sort after and the local people used to sell them as curiosities.

This example is a glass tumbler that someone has petrified and it even has its original label! To the base of the glass is some text which reads ‘Petrifying Well Matlock’.

Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound.
