An Early 19th Century Georgian Glass Toddy Lifter c.1780-1820.

With a small hole either end, the bulbous end would be lowered into a punch bowl, this would then fill, the user would then place their thumb over the top hole causing a vacuum allowing the user to lift the toddy without spillage and transfer to their glass, remove the thumb and the drink pours in.

With diseases like cholera, TB etc being rife during this period, this was seen as a hygienic way of sharing punch.

Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. I had washed it in warm soapy water, hence the minor fogging of the glass in the photos. Structurally sound with no chips. It does have four small marks to the bottom side which won’t come off. Not sure if it was from the making of the piece or if it’s something else. Doesn’t detract from this fantastic item.
