A Charming 18th Century Bilston Enamel Patch Box. These Boxes Were Popular Keepsakes Or Love Tokens, Often Carrying Sentimental Mottos And Symbolic Imagery.
This example shows two gold hearts which signify love and fidelity. The hearts are shown connected, symbolising unity between lovers and eternal affection. The wings suggest that love is elevated, spiritual, or transcendent, and can also represent the swiftness or lightness of love. The blue clouds and sky are typically a symbol of heaven, serenity, and divine blessing, reinforcing the purity or joyful nature of the relationship.
“Be Happy” was a common motto on Bilston enamels, a simple but heartfelt wish for contentment and good fortune, often exchanged between lovers or close friends. The green vine border suggests growth, life, and constancy, the enduring nature of affection.
Many such boxes were given during courtship or as parting gifts before long separations. This is a lovely example.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound and functions well.
