A Fabulous Antique Early 20th Century Folk Art Jigger Doll.

Jigger dolls, sometimes called “jig dolls” or “limberjacks,” are a form of American folk art popular from the 19th century through the early 20th century. These articulated wooden dolls are designed to dance or “jig” when mounted on a vibrating board or paddle, which the operator taps rhythmically, often in time with music.

Typically handmade from wood with jointed limbs, jigger dolls were often painted and stylised, reflecting folk art aesthetics. Their simple construction made them popular home-made toys or tools for street performance.

The term “jig” comes from the lively dance the doll performs. The doll’s jerky, rhythmic movements made it look like it was dancing a jig, hence the name.

These dolls served both as toys for children and tools for adult entertainers. They bridged musical performance with visual amusement, a form of kinetic art that was affordable and widely accessible.

Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound and functions well.
