A Large And Very Beautiful Antique 18th Century Ladies Carriage Flask, Initialled With ‘AC’ And Dated 1775. Sweetly Engraved With A Floral Foliage Design To Both The Back And Front, With A Bird Perched Above The Initials. There’s A Pontil Scar To The Base, In Keeping With The Craftsmanship Of The Period.
It Was Likely Given As A Gift And Was Intended For Cordials Or Liqueurs, Something Both Genteel And Medicinal. Women Might Carry Small Amounts Of Cordial Or Restorative Spirits (Often Called Cordials Or Tonics) Used For Health Or Hospitality. It Was Socially Acceptable For Women To Drink Cordial Mixtures Made With Sugar, Herbs, Or Fruit, Less So To Be Seen Drinking Strong Spirits Directly.
