A Mysterious Antique Watercolour Painting Dating To Around The Late 19th To Early 20th Century. To The Back Of The Painting Is An Architectural Drawing.
This painting itself portrays a dramatic and eerie woodland scene under moonlight, centred around a large, contorted tree whose bare branches dominate the composition.
On the left, three robed, ghostly women gather around a small fire, possibly engaged in a ritual or spell, strongly evoking the archetype of witches or oracles.
On the right, two men confront the scene with swords drawn and tense posture, ready for combat or confrontation.
The composition and lighting create a charged, suspenseful atmosphere, blending supernatural elements with human conflict. The imagery suggests a narrative steeped in myth, legend, or Shakespearean drama, possibly referencing Macbeth or a similar tale.
It would look magnificent displayed in a period black frame!
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. There is some wear to the border edges and corners. With pin holes in the corners where so somebody has had it pinned on display. Very strong imagery overall.
Measures 36cm X 26 cm
