A Rare Antique 17th Century Quill Pen Case. These Cases Were Designed To Store And Protect Writing Instruments Like Quills And Associated Tools.
Most Surviving Historical Examples Of Quill Pen Cases From Museum Collections Are Made From Metal, Leather, Or Ivory. These Materials Were More Durable And Often Associated With Wealth Or Status.
This Example, However, Appears To Be Handmade, By Or For Someone Who Valued Their Writing Tools But Was Unable To Commission An Ornate Piece.
The Lid Is Initialled ‘JM’ And Is Dated 1677. The Base Is Also Initialled ‘JM. There Are Some Other Obscure Markings To The Side.
The Inner Section Shows Signs Of It Having Served As A Case For Early Writing Tools With The Odd Splash Of What Appears To Be Ink Here And There.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound and functions well.
