A Very Rare Early 19th Century Hazel Wood Wand.

During the 1800s, hazel wands were commonly used in European and American folk magic for protection, healing, and divination. Cunning folk and dowsers favoured hazel for its association with wisdom and its supposed ability to detect hidden things like water or lost items.

Hazel wands were favoured in magical rites for their association with wisdom, insight, and poetic inspiration. In some traditions, hazel wands were also considered particularly potent for casting circles or directing energy.

Much of the folklore around hazel comes from earlier Celtic traditions, which remained influential in parts of the British Isles well into the 1800s. Hazel was sacred in Irish and Scottish mythology—especially tied to wisdom and the Otherworld.

In rural areas of Britain, Ireland, and parts of continental Europe, hazel wands were part of traditional folk magic. While many 19th-century people wouldn’t have called themselves “witches” (due to social stigma or religious fear), cunning folk or wise women/men used tools like hazel wands in healing, divination, and protection rituals.

These are seldom seen on the open market, with most held in museums.

Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound.
