A rare antique 19th century sailor’s carved coconut shell cut as a basket. The carving depicts a three masted schooner and a sloop, a country house, a lady waving off a ship, American and British ensign flags and inscriptions which read “God Speed The Ship” and “In Memory Of A Voyage Across The Atlantic.
Carved coconuts were popular maritime souvenirs in the 19th century. They were frequently given to sailors as good luck charms or keepsakes. These coconuts were often intricately carved with faces, nautical symbols, or exotic designs and were believed to ward off evil spirits or bring protection during long voyages.
Condition is excellent.
