This female wax head is a superb example of a moulage and dates to about 1900. These were made as teaching aids for medical students training in dermatological pathology and mental illness.
The absence of lesions, scars or rashes on this example could indicate that the sitter was from an asylum. The open mouth indicates that the sitter was alive when the cast was taken.
Sadly, the sitters would have no say in the process which would involve a plaster cast being taken of their face and then hot wax being poured into the cast to make an exact likeness of the sitter. Real hair was also taken from the sitter or from a donor.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound.
