A curious collection consisting of an antique early 19th century gravestone fragment, five iron coffin nails (two of which are still gripping remnants of coffin wood), with a few additions of blackthorn twigs and bird feathers thrown in.
The coffin nails, recovered decades ago by a gravedigger working along the rural Welsh border, were kept among his belongings until his death. The weathered gravestone fragment still has remnants of its engraved wording.
A macabre collection which speaks of the gravedigger’s quiet custodianship, the slow decay of the materials of mourning, and the continuity between the living earth and those who return to it.
A wonderful addition to your cabinet of curiosities.
