A rare original 19th century treen trap for the game ‘Bat & Trap’, an old English game, once popular as a pub game. Initialled With ‘W.H’.

The game can be traced back as far as the 13th century, and there is recorded evidence of it being played in the West Country in 1671 – although many people believe that Kent has always been its true home. A pub in Canterbury called Ye Olde Beverlie also claims to have records of the game being played around 1740 when it first opened.

It is played with a levered wooden trap, by means of which the ball, about the size of a walnut, is thrown into the air. The ball is struck by the player with the bat. The object of the game is very much like cricket. In fact, many believe it to be the forerunner to cricket.

Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound and functions well. Signs of old wood worm but this has been treated and is long gone.
