A Rare Ancient Roman Lead Curse Still Sealed With Nail.

In ancient Rome, if someone held a grudge, they’d inscribe a curse on a lead sheet, pierce it with a nail, and toss it into a well. Known as Curse Tablets, these were used to ask gods or spirits to harm someone or something. Typically buried or thrown into wells, they were folded to be legible only to the gods, with nails binding the curse until the person made amends. 

The tablet for sale here was found in York during archaeological activity in the 1970s, and was purchased from a private collection locally.
