A Rare Original British World War I Tank Crew Splatter Mask – Sheffield Manufacture.
A scarce and original World War I “splatter mask” issued to British tank personnel during the early years of the war. Constructed of pressed steel with slotted eye apertures and a prominent reinforced nasal guard, fitted with a chainmail curtain to protect the mouth and throat. The interior retains its original fixing points for leather straps (now absent). Clearly stamped/marked “Made in Sheffield”, confirming British manufacture in the nation’s principal steel-working city.
These masks were designed to protect early tank crews from spalling fragments inside thin-armoured vehicles such as the Mark I through Mark IV. Production numbers were limited, and few survive today outside of museums, making this an exceptionally collectible piece of early tank warfare equipment.
These are highly sought after by serious World War I and armour collectors.
Condition is commensurate with age and use. Solid overall, with heavy but stable surface rusting to steel faceplate and chainmail. Maker’s mark present and legible. Chainmail curtain intact and firmly attached. Leather harness missing, as typical. No repairs or restorations noted.
