A Very Rare Early 19th Century Engraver’s Proof Of Napoleon At Malmaison On Silk, After Jean-Baptiste Isabey, Engraved By Charles-Louis Lingée And Finished By Richard Cooper, c. 1802–1804. Period Handwritten Provenance Label To The Back.

The period handwritten label to the back reads:

Napoleon at Malmaisonin colours on silk after Isabey, engraved by L. Lingeé and finished by Richard Cooper. An engraver’s proof before the erasure of the little dog, which being disproportionate was soon erased and does not appear in the published plate. Most probably unique in this state.”

This rare silk impression depicts Napoleon at Malmaison, based on a portrait by Jean-Baptiste Isabey (1767–1855), the celebrated French miniaturist and portraitist who moved easily within the circles of Napoleon and Joséphine.

The plate was engraved by Charles-Louis Lingée (1748–1819), a French master of stipple and line engraving active in the final years of the 18th century, and was finished by Richard Cooper the Younger (1740–1822), a Scottish engraver who spent much of his career in Paris, refining plates after leading French artists.

Malmaison itself, acquired by Joséphine Bonaparte in 1799, became both a private retreat and an unofficial seat of government during the Consulate. This particular impression is of exceptional interest: an engraver’s proof on silk, it still shows the faint outline of a small dog later erased from the published plate. Printed on a luxury medium reserved for special copies, it offers not only a refined example of Franco-British printmaking collaboration but also a rare glimpse into the evolving visual construction of Napoleon’s public image at the dawn of his rise to power.

Condition is as seen. Very time worn. Despite these flaws, the principal design remains legible, including the faint outline of the small dog at Napoleon’s feet. The work retains historical and scholarly interest, particularly as an engraver’s proof on silk of a rare early state.
