An Intriguing Late 18th-19th Century (Possibly Even Older) Horn Snuff Mull Depicting A Folk Art Engraved Image Of Oliver Cromwell To The Front And, What Appears To Be, Engraved Greek Lettering To The Back.

Appears To Have Some Considerable Age And Was Originally Acquired From The ‘Hines Collection’, A Phenomenal Collection Of Predominantly Treen Pieces, Dating Back As Far As The 17th Century.

Oliver Cromwell was an English statesman, politician and soldier, widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of the British Isles. He came to prominence during the 1639 to 1653 Wars of the Three Kingdoms, initially as a senior commander in the Parliamentarian army and latterly as a politician.

I have had the Greek inscription translated and it says “I Give Glory To God”. Cromwell is known to have had an interest in and a passion for Greek history.

It is certainly a item filled with intrigue and mystery…

Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound, but does have some minor damage to one side of the hinge which means it is a little fragile. It closes securely but please see pictures.

Measures 9cm x 8.5cm x 4cm

Weighs 118.36 grams
