A Marvelous Antique 18th Century Apothecary Bottle And Dose Glass.

The cobalt blue apothecary bottle is labeled “PRUNI. VIRG.” and topped with a ground stopper. It would have once held a preparation of Prunus Virginiana, commonly known as chokecherry. Indigenous to North America, chokecherry bark was prized for its medicinal properties and was commonly used as a remedy for coughs, fevers, and digestive ailments.

Meanwhile, the cobalt blue glass protected light-sensitive compounds from degradation and preserved the potency of the contents within. This bottle also has the rarer stopper locking mechanism.

Accompanying the bottle is a small, finely hand blown dose glass or tincture glass, an essential tool of the apothecary’s trade.

It has a flared rim and knop stem, and was used to measure and administer medicinal tinctures with precision. It could hold small quantities of potent liquids, ensuring that apothecaries, physicians, or caretakers dispensed correct dosages in an age before standardised pills or capsules.

This is a wonderful pairing for your cabinet of curiosities!

Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound, no obvious chips or cracks.

Measures 20cm x 8cm (bottle) & 7cm x 4.5cm (glass)

Weighs 423.62 grams
