A beautiful and un-common 18th century glass mustard jar with original lid, circa 1790. Many of these you see are missing their lids, this example being complete makes it rare. It has a lovely shape.
These jars reflected the growing popularity of mustard as a condiment in 18th-century British dining and the period’s increasing emphasis on refined table settings. Mustard was widely consumed in dry powder form and mixed with water or vinegar before serving.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. No chips or cracks.
