A Rare Antique Early 17th Century Stained Glass Panel Dated 1628.
It features an inscription naming two individuals, likely donors or individuals commemorated in connection with a local church or guild. The panel is executed in the Northern European tradition, with stylistic elements typical of ecclesiastical glass of the period, including decorative scrollwork and calligraphic script.
Whilst the glass bears evidence of extensive repair, the visible lead work and stabilisation measures appear to be consistent with earlier conservation efforts.
This panel reflects the enduring Renaissance-era practice of commemorating civic and religious patrons through stained glass, a tradition that reached its peak in the 16th and early 17th centuries. Being both dated and named makes this piece particularly desirable.
A rare survivor!
Condition is decent, commensurate with age. As mentioned, you’ll see extensive repair and stabilisation lead work. There is also a small crack through the central top left section, as photographed.
