A Bible box was a small wooden chest, usually rectangular and with a sloping lid, made to store the household Bible, often the most valuable object in a home, and sometimes writing materials or important papers.
They were placed on tables, cupboards, or desks and symbolised both literacy and faith. Owning one implied the family could read scripture, which was a matter of pride after the Reformation.
**The Stool The Box Is Sat On Is Not Included**
Condition is okay. Needs some work. The lid is unattached from the box. It would have originally had some metal hoops connecting the lid to the box. The lid itself has been repaired through the middle. There are other signs of age related wear.
