A superb late 19th century sailor folk art cigarette ditty box. Heavily engraved with foliage, along with the names of the places visited by the sailor on their epic voyage.
When sailors went to sea in the 19th century, they faced difficult working conditions, cramped personal space onboard ship, and voyages that at times could stretch for months or even years.
As self-taught artists, sailors engaged with the working world of the ship, imagined their ideal lives on shore, and created objects to commemorate their experiences at sea. Their handmade creations show the art that emerged out of this working world, which reflected their connections to shipboard life, their thoughts about culture on shore, and souvenirs created to remember and share the experiences of their travels.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound and functions.
