A Rare One-Off Antique Victorian Embossed Red Leather Nib Wipe With A Picture Of FitzRoy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan To The Front And Embossed Wording To The Back Which Reads “J.L. Baldwin From Lady Raglan June 10th 1855”. A Personal Gift From Lady Raglan.
Interestingly, Baron Raglan (pictured to the front) died on 28th June 1855, just 18 days after the date on this item… Could this piece have been a gift to his doctor, a J.L. Baldwin…?
FitzRoy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan was the Duke of Wellington’s right hand man. He fought in the Battle of Waterloo where he lost an arm. He later married the Duke of Wellington’s niece, who then became our Lady Raglan!
