A Rare 18th Century Gent’s Bone Wig Scratcher In The Form Of A Hand.

In the 18th century, wig scratchers were ingenious little tools designed to provide relief from the itchiness caused by wearing wigs. Wigs at the time were often made from horsehair or human hair, and they were heavily powdered and styled with pomades. This combination, along with limited hygiene practices, led to discomfort and itchiness, especially as lice and other pests could infest the wigs.

Ladies’ scratchers were longer than gentlemen’s because women’s wigs in the 18th century were typically larger, more elaborate, and heavily styled, often reaching significant heights. The longer scratchers allowed women to reach through the intricate layers of hair, padding, and powder to access their scalps without disturbing the elaborate coiffures. In contrast, men’s wigs were generally smaller and simpler, requiring shorter scratchers.

This is an example of one of the rarer Gent’s scratchers.

Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound.
