A Rare 18th Century Antler Snuff Box With An Intriguing Curiosity Inside… A Wolf’s Tooth And A Handwritten Note That Reads “Wolf’s Tooth With Man’s Head Carved Into Its Root. J, Eldred Esq”.

A snuff box is exactly what you think it is. A box for holding snuff, which is a scented, powdered tobacco. The practice of sniffing or inhaling a pinch of snuff was common in England during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

The wolf was said to be the favourite disguise of the devil. Much like with witches, paranoia around the existence of Werewolves became a huge problem throughout the 17th century. So much so that Werewolf trials led to the execution of hundreds of men, women and children.

According to ancient folklores, it was believed that wearing a wolf’s tooth around your neck protected you from evil. In fact, wolves’ teeth have been used as charms and remedies against evil and disease since the Stone Age, and have even been found in prehistoric graves.

Why is the root of this particular example carved into the form of a man…? Well, we may never know…

Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound. No issues.
