A Rare Antique 19th Century Highway Robbery Reward Poster Issued By The General Post Office, London On January 29, 1819.
It reads:
“WHEREAS about Six o’Clock on the Night of Tuesday, the 26th Instant, JAMES HARRIS, the Postman conveying the Mail between Chertsey & Staines, was feloniously stopped in the Highway, and robbed of his Watch, and was also cruelly beaten by the Robber or Robbers.
WHOEVER shall Apprehend the Person or Persons guilty of the said Robbery, shall receive the above Reward.
By Command of the Postmaster General,
F. FREELING, SECRETARY.
J. Downes, Printer, 240, Strand, London.
⸻
This type of poster would have been distributed and displayed publicly (in inns, post offices, and local gathering places) to encourage capture of highway robbers, a serious problem in the early 19th century.
Attacks on postmen or mail coaches were seen as particularly serious because they endangered communication and commerce, so rewards could be very high.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Some browning and creasing. One small repair to small tear at the top edge.
Measures 31.5cm x 23.5cm
