A Rare Antique Ripon Workhouse Child’s Sycamore Pauper’s Bowl, c.18th-19th Century.
These were often handheld and eaten from without a spoon or fork. Lovely patina and wonderfully misshapen. You can see the areas of wear which correlate with it being held in hands to either side and with it having been directly eaten from with the mouth.
It‘s scratched to the base with ‘Ripon Workhouse’. An astonishing piece of social history.
Research suggests there has been a workhouse in Ripon – on its current site – since 1776-7, at the former Allhallows Hall, but there were other institutions dating to the 17th century in Ripon too. Those that are known were a poorhouse in nearby Sharow, and one in the Archbishop’s Manor house.
18th century Parliamentary journals/documents are littered with permissions for the erection of workhouses across England. One such report dated to 1777 lists the workhouse in Ripon as able to hold 30 inmates.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound.
