A Rare Piece Of Salvaged Timber From HMS Victoria, Flagship Of Vice-Admiral Sir George Tryon, KCB. The Battleship Sank On 22 June 1893 Off Beirut After A Collision With HMS Camperdown During Fleet Manoeuvres, Resulting In The Loss Of Over 350 Lives, Including Tryon.
According To The Original Period Label, This Fragment Was Recovered From The Wreck By A Boat Crew Under Midshipman F. E. M. Garforth Of HMS Nile, And Later Gifted By Him To The Label’s Author.
Garforth, Later Lieutenant And Naval Attaché To Prince Henry Of Prussia, Served In HMS Orlando, Received The 1897 Jubilee Medal, And Took Part In The Boxer Rebellion With The Naval Brigade Under Sir Edward Seymour.
This Well-Documented Relic Offers A Tangible Link To One Of The Royal Navy’s Most Tragic 19th Century Disasters.
