A Nice Vintage Medical Glass Eye Dating To Around The 1930’s/40s. Good Detail And Comes With Vintage Jewellery Box.
Soldiers during the first and second world wars suffered often horrific eye injuries from both battle and disease. Artillery was the most frequent cause of battle casualties, often caused by metal fragments splintering the eye. Military eye prosthetics became a necessity. Unfortunately, glass eyes became in short supply during the war as most were produced in Germany.
All existing stock in Britain was put under the control of the Army during WW1. Between December 1916 and August 1919, it had supplied over 22,000 eyes across the country.
It’s believed that for every soldier killed during the war, a further two were wounded; disabled or disfigured.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound, no chips or cracks.
