This early 20th century electric shock treatment set reflects the era’s fascination with electricity as a tool for healing the mind. In asylums and psychiatric hospitals, similar devices were used in attempts to treat melancholia, hysteria, and other mental illnesses by “restoring nervous balance” through controlled electric shocks. Though crude by modern standards, such instruments embodied the belief that mental disorders could be corrected through physical stimulation, an uneasy blend of science, experimentation, and desperation that defined early psychiatric care.
A must have for your cabinet of curiosities.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. The front flap hinges need to be reattached to the box, but apart from this, a very fine piece.
