A Charming Late 17th Or Early 18th Century Cottage Wrought Iron Rushlight On A 19th Century Replacement Fruitwood Base. The Original Counterweight Is In The Form Of A Iron Cylinder.

Rushlights were an early form of domestic lighting commonly used in the 17th century, especially in rural areas of Britain and Europe. They consisted of dried rushes that were stripped down and soaked in animal fat (like tallow), then held in place by a metal holder—often made of wrought iron.

They were inexpensive and widely accessible, making them a practical lighting solution before candles and oil lamps became more affordable.

They burned for a relatively short time—often only 10 to 15 minutes per rush—so several were typically used throughout the evening.
