A Wonderful Antique 18th Century Carved Santos Head On Later Stand. Heavily Time Worn Making For A Fantastic Decorative Appearance.
18th century santos heads are religious devotional objects that originated primarily from Spanish and Portuguese colonial traditions. They are rare and highly collectible, often regarded as both sacred artefacts and pieces of fine folk art.
“Santos” (Spanish for “saints”) are religious statues or figures representing Christian saints, the Virgin Mary, or Christ. A santos head refers to the carved head of such a figure, often detached from the original full-body sculpture due to age, wear, or damage. These heads were either standalone devotional items (especially in personal home altars), parts of larger figures used in churches or religious processions.
While some were made by skilled artists, others came from local artisans, resulting in a raw, heartfelt folk art aesthetic.
