A Crude And Highly Naive Carved Antique Stone Stela Fragment, Reputedly Salvaged From A Church Wall In Derbyshire.
Carved from either sandstone or a form of gritstone, it certainly has a Medieval look, but it’s a difficult piece to date. However, emblems of mortality and immortality were seldom used after the 18th century.
It’s carved with relief imagery, depicting the naive image of an angel with a distant gaze, flanked by a moon and a star.
The Angel symbolises the messenger of God, often depicted pointing heavenward, and is the guardian of the living, and the dead. The Moon symbolises Rebirth, while the Star symbolises divine guidance.
A fabulous piece of history full of intrigue and mystery…
Condition is good, commensurate with age. Structurally sound. Good clear imagery.
