A Superb Antique 16th-17th Century Oak Figural Carving. The Square Mortise Cut In The Bottom Suggests That This Was Originally Part Of A Larger Structure, Likely Architectural Or Furniture-Related—Such As Part Of A Choir Stall, Bench End, Or Decorative Corbel.
The Expressive And Somewhat Grotesque Style Is Very Much In Keeping With The Medieval Tradition Of Moral Caricature—Often Used To Convey Spiritual Lessons, Satire, Or Simply Provide Visual Interest.
A Very Nice Piece Indeed.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound.
