A Charming Collection Of Antique 18th And 19th Century Games, Including Knucklebones And Clay Marbles. Both Lots Found During Thames Mudlarking. A Nice collection.
Knucklebones goes back thousands of years, long before the 18th century. It was originally played with the astragalus bones (ankle bones) of sheep or goats. These bones had four flat sides and could land in different positions, making them perfect for tossing and catching games.
During the 18th century, knucklebones was a popular children’s pastime across cultures. It was played by scattering the pieces onto the ground. One is then picked up to be the “toss piece”. This was then tossed into the air. While it’s in the air, the player quickly picks up one piece from the ground. Catch the tossed piece in the same hand. Repeat until all pieces are collected.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound. Some age related wear to be expected because of the nature of how they were found.
