A Curious Antique 19th Century Figural Stone Folk Art Carving. It’s Weathered And Shows Traits Of Folk Or Naive Sculpture. The Naivety And Rough Carving Suggest It May Have Been Made By A Local Artisan or Folk Sculptor Rather Than An Academic-Trained Artist.

I’ve Seen Something Similar Before That Turned Out To Be A Grave Marker. Certainly, The Rough-Hewn, Earnest Features Are Consistent With Vernacular Or Folk Grave Markers, Particularly Of The 18th–19th Centuries In Rural Europe, Where Local Craftsmen Created Tomb Sculptures Without Academic Training.

In Rural Germany, Particularly In Southern Regions Like Bavaria, There Was A Tradition Of Folk Grave Markers Made From Wood Or Stone. These Would Include Simple Busts Or Reliefs Of The Deceased, Especially In Small Village Cemeteries.

Regardless Of Whether It Is Or Isn’t A Grave Marker, It Makes For A Wonderful Piece Of Decorative Sculptural Art.

Condition is good, commensurate with age. Structurally sound. Age related wear to be expected.
