A Rare Antique Wax Medical Moulage Foot Study With Frostbitten Toes Dating To Around 1900. These Were Made As Teaching Aids For Medical Students Training In Dermatological Pathology.
A mold was made using materials like plaster of Paris or gelatine directly on the patient’s body. This could be uncomfortable but generally not painful. The mold was then used to cast the body part in coloured wax. Artists would then hand-paint and add fine details to replicate the body part and its ailment.
Before photography and advanced imaging, moulages were vital for showing real-case pathologies without needing a live patient. They were displayed in teaching hospitals or museums affiliated with medical schools and were sometimes used in exhibitions to educate the public about disease prevention.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound. Some dirt to the sole of the foot.
