A 19th century Victorian spelling game in a mahogany box with a sliding lid. The lid is chamfered and inlaid in bone with 'Spelling Alphabet’. Inside are 86 bone tiles, each of which is double-sided with a lower case letter on one side and the equivalent upper case one on the other. There is at least one of every letter. English, circa 1850s.
These boxes were used to help learn to spell and help identify letters of the alphabet.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound, however, it does appear as though both ends have been re-glued (please see photos). Bone letters are superb with clear lettering.
