This charming hand carved folk art apple corer is crafted from polished bone and beautifully engraved with the date 1824, the name Anne and some further initials which are difficult to decipher. It has hearts on it suggesting it may have been a form of love token.

Such tools were once essential in the farmhouse kitchen, used to neatly remove the core from apples before baking or drying. Before metal corers became common, they were often carved from bone, horn, or antler, sometimes by sailors, shepherds, or itinerant workers as pastime crafts. This example features delicate dotted decoration of hearts and flowers.

Named and dated examples are becoming more difficult to find.

Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound.
