A Large World War 2 Era Fire Guard Treen Compass, Used To Circle Geographical Areas Where The Fire Guards Teams Would Be Working In Their Shifts, Or To Show Where Major Incidents Were Occurring, For Example Bomb Explosions, Fires Etc…
But What Is Lovely About This Piece Was That I discovered An Extract Of A Letter Secreted In The End Of The Compass Where The Pencil Sits. It Was Being Used To Wedge The Pencil In Tightly. Clearly It Has Been Sitting In There Since It Was Written In 1943 During World War 2.
It’s Amazing What A Little Scrap Of Paper Can Reveal About It’s History And It’s Context At The Time It Was Produced.
Mr Sesnan Referred To In The Letter Who Was On Fire Guard Duty At Claremont Was James Sesnan Who Was Born On The 7th January 1888 In Darlington. In 1916, He Was Married To Mary And The 1939 Register Taken At The Start Of World War Two Shows Them Living At 54 Brook Terrace In Darlington. His Occupation Is Shown As A Locomotive Fitter.
The Claremont Referred To In The Letter Was Also In Darlington And Was Five Minutes Away From George Street. There Is No Record Showing James’s Death But Hopefully He Survived The War.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound and functions well. Lovely patina on the wood.
