A rare example of a hand-tooled leather personal utensil scabbard with accompanying knife, dating to the late 15th or early 16th century. This came from a collection.
Sets like this were designed to carry multiple items like a knife and pricker or spoon, and were carried by individuals, often suspended from a belt. The wear and patina on both of these pieces suggest extended use.
The scabbard is ornately decorated with a geometric and stamped pattern, showcasing period-appropriate craftsmanship, and is constructed from thick, well-preserved leather with a distinctive internal structure, designed to hold multiple tools.
The knife itself has a narrow, tapering blade with signs of hand-forging, and a handle constructed from horn, fastened with multiple brass tubular rivets in a decorative arrangement. There is a maker’s mark on the blade.
A very rare survivor!
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound.
