A rare 18th-century Jacobite rebellion horn priming / powder flask with decorative detailing around the rim and a metal Jacobite rose attached to the base.

The Jacobite rose was a symbolic flower associated with the Jacobite movement and carried deep significance for Jacobite supporters. Support was often expressed covertly due to the political and military repression faced by its followers. The white rose became a discreet symbol of allegiance to the cause. The rose symbolised purity and the enduring loyalty of Jacobite supporters to the Stuart cause.

A porder flask, like this one, was used to hold fine gunpowder, specifically for priming the pan of a flintlock firearm. During this period, flintlock firearms required a small amount of fine powder in the priming pan to ignite the main charge in the barrel when the trigger was pulled.

In the context of the Jacobite rebellions in the 18th century, these flasks would have been essential tools for Jacobite soldiers or sympathisers who carried flintlock pistols or muskets during their uprisings against the British government. The rebellions, particularly the most famous uprising in 1745 led by Charles Edward Stuart (“Bonnie Prince Charlie”), involved both traditional Highland weaponry and more modern firearms, necessitating accessories like powder flasks for effective combat.
