A Beautiful Antique 16th Century Oak Carving Of Justice Dated 1581.

This oak carving from 1581 depicts the allegorical figure of Justice, a central Renaissance symbol of moral and civic order. Holding a sword and scales, she represents the authority and impartiality of the law.

Unlike later depictions, she is not blindfolded, reflecting the earlier belief that justice should be guided by wisdom rather than obscured vision.

Above her is a lion’s head, a powerful symbol of courage, vigilance, and sovereign authority. In the 16th century, the lion was often used to represent both royal power and the moral strength required to uphold justice.

Carved during a time of religious and political upheaval in Europe, this piece likely adorned a civic or legal space, serving as a moral reminder of equity, judgment, and accountability.

A rare survivor!

Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Signs of age related wear and patina. Some minor chips and losses, and signs of old woodworm, which has long gone.
