A rare antique late 18th to early 19th century sketched portrait of Sir George Armytage (1761-1836). He lived in Kirklees Hall in West Yorkshire (the site known as Robin Hood’s Grave). He was sheriff of Yorkshire and commanded the Huddersfield fusiliers Volunteers raised in response to the food riots in west Yorkshire cities.

The Mr Fawkes referred to is Walter Fawkes (1769-1825) of Farnley Hall near Otley. Walter Fawkes, a descendent of Guy Fawkes, was the patron of Joseph Mallard William Turner (1775-1851) who visited and stayed at Farnley Hall annually between 1808-1824 to paint. Eventually, Walter Fawkes’ granddaughter, Ellen, married Sir George Armytage’s grandson in 1871, uniting the families through marriage.
It’s a lovely little piece of local Yorkshire social history of two important Georgian individuals.
Condition is good, commensurate with age. Structurally sound with good strong imagery. No obvious issues.
