A Rare Antique 19th Century Coffin Maker’s Sizing And Design Reference Template Board. It Appears As Though It May Have Been Specifically For The Head.
Craftsmen In The Past, Especially Rural Carpenters Or Undertakers, Often Kept Such Boards For Reference When Building Custom-Sized Coffins. The Numerical Chart Would Help Them Scale The Coffin Appropriately Based On The Individual’s Measurements.
In Traditional Coffin Making (Especially In The 19th To Early 20th Centuries), The Head Or Shoulder Width Was Often Used As A Starting Reference To Proportion The Rest Of The Coffin. The Head/Shoulder Width Determined The Coffin’s Broadest Point, And From There, All Other Dimensions (Length, Taper, Foot Width) Could Be Scaled.
The Small Nailed-On Diagram With Numbers 1–8 Appears To Label Specific Measurement Points On A Coffin Shape, Which Could Correlate With Standard Measurement Positions Based On Head Width. There Is Some Cursive Writing Near The Diagram Which Says “Feet First Into The House Feet First Into The House”.
The Board Has A Grid Or Table Of Numerical Data To The Other Side, Handwritten In Pencil, Which Indicates Dimensions And Measurements, Corresponding To Different Parts Of A Coffin, For Different Sizes. It Has The Length Of The Body Down The Left Hand Side With The Appropriate Measurements Required For The Coffin To Fit That Size Body Following The Line Across To The Right Hand Side.
A Fascinating, Albeit Rather Macabre, Piece Of Social History And A Rare Survivor!
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound. Age related wear, chips and scuffs to be expected.
