A Rare Antique 19th Century Witches Oak Apothecary Box With Partially Mummified Witches Familiar In The Lid, Likely A Mouse.
In European folklore of the medieval and early modern periods, familiars (strictly familiar spirits) were believed to be supernatural entities or spiritual guardians that would protect or assist witches and cunning folk in their practice of magic.
Familiar spirits were most commonly small animals, such as cats, rats, mice, dogs, ferrets, birds, frogs, toads and hares.
The glass compartment on the lid of this box is believed to contain one of these witches familiars in the form of a mouse. The box would have originally contained various paraphernalia for creating magic, with the witches familiar assisting in wreaking havoc.
Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound, functions well, with no chips or cracks to the glass.
Measures 10cm x 8.5cm x 5.5cm
